Wampum shell is new to me in this latest Lavender Collection and I couldn’t be happier to have come to know it!
The shell has a beautiful and important history to the Indigenous people of Northeastern Woodlands. They used it to record traditions, historical events and treaties. The colors held deep meaning…white symbolized peace and harmony while purple represented more somber events like war.
Made from the quahog clam and the channeled whelk, creating beads was a painstaking and labor intensive process. Woven into intricate belts, the beads still serve as sacred symbol of sovereignty and cultural heritage.
These incredible 6mm rondelle beads are highlighted by even more incredible 8mm cross beads and sterling silver accents!
The necklace measures 17”, with the option to clasp up to 18” with the sterling silver hook and links.
